TSMC to build chip plant in Japan

All national dailies wrote that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) announced on Tuesday that it will build a plant in Japan for the first time in a joint venture with Sony, which will invest $500 million in the $7 billion project. The plant will be located in Kumamoto Prefecture and is scheduled to begin mass production by the end of 2024.


Nikkei wrote that the GOJ has made efforts to invite TSMC, which has the world’s most advanced chip manufacturing technologies, to open a plant in Japan and plans to support the Kumamoto project through subsidies worth several hundred billion yen in the hope that the project will help ensure a stable supply of semiconductors.
