Hagiuda welcomes TSMC’s plan to build plant in Kumamoto

TBS reported that Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Hagiuda welcomed the official announcement by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) that it will build a new chip plant in Kumamoto, Japan. Hagiuda reportedly said: “I unreservedly welcome TSMC’s decision to invest in a semiconductor plant in Japan.” A joint venture with Sony will begin constructing the plant next year, and the new plant is scheduled to begin mass production by the end of 2024. The total investment in the project is estimated at 800 billion yen, of which Sony will invest about 57 billion yen. The network said the Japanese government is planning to provide several hundred billion yen to the plant as a subsidy over the next several years given that stable procurement of semiconductors is important for economic security. NHK carried a similar story.
