Japan welcomes TSMC’s plan to build chip factory in Kumamoto

Thursday’s Yomiuri and Sankei wrote that the GOJ was pleased with the official announcement made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) concerning its plan to build a plant in Kumamoto in partnership with Sony. The GOJ is reportedly expected to revise existing legislation to support the project financially by covering almost half of its estimated cost of $7 billion. “We would like to secure the necessary funding and set up a multiyear scheme for financial and other assistance to implement measures equivalent to those taken by other nations,” said Trade Minister Hagiuda on Wednesday. Yomiuri explained that the GOJ is anxious to subsidize the research, development, and production of semiconductors in Japan as foreign governments are competing to increase their domestic output of the key strategic material amid a global supply shortage.
