All national papers on Saturday took up an announcement made by the Defense Ministry on Friday that the SDF conducted “asset protection” operations for the Australian military during a recent bilateral naval drill off the coast of Shikoku. The JS Inazuma reportedly “escorted” the HMAS Warramunga, a Tribal-class destroyer of the Royal Australian Navy, at the request of Australia. This was the first time for the SDF to provide asset protection for foreign armed forces other than the U.S. military. “The interoperability of the two militaries improved as a result of the operation,” a MOD spokesperson was quoted as saying. “This represents extremely important progress in Japan-Australia security cooperation.”
