NHK and TBS reported that Defense Minister Kishi told SDF personnel on Sunday that Japan will set up a second space operations unit at Hofu Kita Air Base in Yamaguchi Prefecture in fiscal 2022. NHK noted that this move follows the establishment of Japan’s first space operations unit in Fuchu, Tokyo. According to the network, the second unit will comprise about 20 personnel and be tasked with monitoring threats to Japanese satellites using a space surveillance radar currently under construction in Yamaguchi. Kishi reportedly told the SDF personnel that it is “extremely important” to ensure the stable use of outer space.
