U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Raymond Greene: Consider political system when deciding accession to TPP

U.S. Chargé d’Affaires ad interim Raymond Greene

Japan is exercising leadership toward an international order based on the rule of law at [multilateral] frameworks, including those the U.S. is not involved in. China and Taiwan have applied to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement. I hope that China’s coercive stance backed by its economic power will be taken into consideration in deciding whether to admit Beijing. Taiwan’s democratic political system should be factored into the assessment as well. (JMH Note: This article is part of a one-page feature on the Mt. Fuji Dialogue.)
