The “Diet members’ league for supporting Southern Mongolia,” a group of like-minded Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) members working to pass down the culture of the Mongols persecuted in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in China, held a meeting in the National Diet Building on Oct. 18. They agreed to aim to adopt a resolution criticizing human rights violations in the region and elsewhere by the Chinese government at an extraordinary Diet session to be convened in December.
They also agreed to consider how Japan should respond to the Beijing Winter Olympics to be held in February of next year, including a “diplomatic boycott” by not sending a government delegation. Upper House member Yamada Hiroshi, who leads the Diet members’ league, said, “It is unacceptable that the Chinese government will hold a festival of peace despite its repeated instances of suppression that are inconceivable in human history.” (Abridged)
