Takaichi Sanae, secretary-general of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), showed willingness to succeed Prime Minister Kishida Fumio in a BS TV Tokyo program broadcast on Dec. 5. When asked if Takaichi will aim for a “post-Kishida [position],” she declared, “Of course.” Takaichi also said, “For now, I will do my best to support Prime Minister Kishida.”

Takaichi, who is not affiliated with any LDP faction, once belonged to the Machimura faction (currently the Abe faction). She commented on her possible return to a faction by saying, “I was wondering if I could return [to my old faction] when the [Machimura] faction became the Abe faction, but I haven’t been invited. I might go it alone for a while.”
