The government is likely to reduce the official prices of drugs (National Health insurance list prices) in the FY2022 budget by about 150 billion yen (government-expenditure basis). Reducing drug prices has become a focus of the budget negotiations. By lowering the drug price portion of “medical fees,” the government hopes to achieve a negative rate of increase in that category. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and the Ministry of Finance will finalize the details.

The “core portion” of medical fees, which includes technical fees for medical personnel and labor costs, will be the focus of the discussions going forward.
