Tokyo, Dec. 4 (Jiji Press)–Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party is making arrangements to hold a regular party convention at a Tokyo hotel on March 13, 2022, party sources said Saturday.

The schedule is expected to be formalized at a meeting of the General Council on Friday.

At the convention, LDP members will reaffirm party unity in the run-up to the triennial election for the House of Councillors, the upper chamber of parliament, next summer. The party will also adopt an activity strategy including its plans for constitutional amendments.

The LDP will consider whether to limit the number of participants at the convention by watching the situation of infections with the omicron variant of the novel coronavirus and other factors.

The party leadership team also hopes to revise party rules at the convention to carry out reform measures, including limiting the terms of office for party executives in line with a proposal by Prime Minister and LDP President Fumio Kishida.
