According to the December NHK public opinion poll, 60% of respondents said they would like the government to move up third COVID-19 shots, which in principle are to be administered eight months after the second shot. Meanwhile, 25% have said that the booster shots do not need to be moved up and 9% said that they will not get the injection. Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has indicated his intention to reduce the period between the shots as much as possible.

NHK conducted a nationwide survey over the three-day period of Dec. 10–12, 2021 on a computer-aided random digit dialing (RDD) basis and targeted men and women aged 18 or over with calls placed to landline and mobile phone numbers. Valid responses were received from 1,190 of the 2,093 people polled. The valid response rate was 57%.

Izumi Kenta, the leader of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, said he aims to change his party’s image so that it is not viewed as a party that criticizes the administration but rather as a party that is focused on policies. Asked whether it is more important for opposition parties to focus on proposing policies or on monitoring the administration, 33% said “it is more important for opposition parties to propose policies,” 28% said “generally speaking proposing policies is more important” while 16% said “generally speaking monitoring the administration is more important” and 11% said “monitoring the administration is more important.”

Asked whether they will return to their hometowns or travel during the year-end and New Year’s holidays, 11% said they will while 66% said that they will not and 18% said they have not decided yet. Compared with the last year’s responses to the same question, those who said they will travel increased by 6 percentage points while those who said they will not decreased by 15 points.
