Gist of interpellations at Lower House budget committee meeting, Dec. 14, 2021

The following is the gist of interpellations at the Lower House budget committee meeting on Dec. 14, 2021:

Nuclear disarmament

Okada Katsuya (Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan): Japan would benefit from participating as an observer in the meeting of signatories to the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Prime Minister Kishida Fumio: The treaty is important as it offers a way to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons, but none of the nuclear powers have joined it. Nothing will change unless the nuclear states take action. If Japan were to actively back the ideal [expressed in the treaty] without first forging ties of trust regarding nuclear disarmament and nuclear nonproliferation with the United States, it would damage trust with our ally while not effecting any change in the current reality of nuclear weapons.
