On a BS Nippon television program that aired on Dec. 14, Sato Masahisa, chief of foreign division of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), and Korogi Ichiro, professor at the Kanda University of International Studies, discussed the Summit for Democracy hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden.
Regarding the nations and regions that were invited to take part in the summit, Sato said, “The criteria for determining which countries to invite were unclear. The countries that weren’t invited will end up joining the authoritarian camp. Better preparations should have been made.” Remarking on a document touting “Chinese-style democracy” that China released before the summit, Sato said: “Democracy under an authoritarian regime is inconceivable. The United States needs to keep working on it.”
