The following is the gist of interpellations at the Upper House budget committee meeting on Dec. 17, 2021:
Third shots of COVID-19 vaccines
Yamamoto Kanae (Komeito): The government will allow cross-vaccination with a different vaccine from the one used in the first two doses. Is it safe and effective?
Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare Goto Shigeyuki: According to research in the UK, side reactions that will occur within seven days after inoculation are admissible in terms of safety. It also found that [cross-vaccination] had fully increased the antibody value (which indicates the amount of antibody).
Border control measures
Onoda Kimi (Liberal Democratic Party): How many people tested negative [for COVID] at airports but were later found to be positive?
Health Minister Goto: There are many cases where we cannot determine whether a person who tested positive was infected before or after entering Japan.
Prime Minister Kishida Fumio: Disclosing information is very important for eliminating the public’s anxiety. I want the working group led by Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu to consider the issue [of information disclosure].
