Liberal Democratic Party Foreign Affairs Division Director Sato Masahisa and Sasakawa Peace Foundation Senior Fellow Ohara Bonji appeared on BS Nippon TV’s “Shinso News [in-depth news]” program on Dec. 20 and discussed the problem that more and more countries are forging diplomatic relations with China and breaking off ties with Taiwan.

Sato pointed out that more and more countries are breaking off relations with Taiwan “because of China’s nasty practice of taking advantage of poor countries.” He added, “The trend of severing diplomatic ties [with Taiwan] may continue as China utilizes its infrastructure investment [to draw them in].” Ohara touched on South Pacific island nations’ establishing diplomatic relations with Beijing, saying, “It is important for Japan to conduct diplomacy with these nations at its own initiative.”
