Japan’s security environment rapidly deteriorating: Top GSDF official

Tokyo –  Chief of Staff, Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) Yoshida Yoshihide said at a press conference on Dec. 23 that Japan’s security environment is “deteriorating in a rapidly accelerating manner” and acknowledged the global COVID-19 epidemic is worsening divisions and conflicts in the international community. Yoshida stated that strategic competition between the U.S. and China is intensifying in various fields.

Yoshida explained that he held a Dec. 20 video conference with Lieutenant General James Bierman, commander of the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force, the highest-ranking U.S. military official in Okinawa, to exchange opinions on future cooperation between the GSDF and U.S. Marine Corps. Yoshida noted out that the main focus of the Japan-U.S. joint training is the synergy between the GSDF’s “cross-domain operation” and the Marine Corps’ new operational concept, the “Expeditionary Advanced Base Operation (EABO).”
