Nikkei wrote that Japan will explain to the United States at their virtual 2+2 meeting of foreign and defense ministers to be held in January its plan to revise the nation’s national security strategy at the end of 2022 and increase its defense spending for fiscal 2022. The paper wrote that Tokyo also expects to discuss deterrence against China’s military buildup. The daily noted that this will be the first U.S.-Japan 2+2 meeting since the one in March this year, at which the ministers agreed to further strengthen their alliance in response to China’s increasing activities near the Senkaku Islands and Japan pledged in a joint statement its determination to beef up its defense capabilities. The paper speculated that Japan will explain the achievements of such efforts at the upcoming 2+2 meeting.
