All national dailies wrote on Monday that 554 new coronavirus cases were confirmed in Japan on Sunday. The figure was up from the 534 cases reported on Saturday. Tokyo confirmed 84 new cases on Sunday, up 41 from a week ago. The average daily number of new cases over the seven-day period through Sunday was 66, up 88% from a week earlier. Ibaraki, Kagawa, and Kochi Prefectures reported their first cases of the Omicron variant on Sunday, while Chiba, Kanagawa, Aichi, Kyoto, Osaka and Shimane prefectures confirmed additional cases of the new variant.
