Monday’s Nikkei wrote that Japan’s lunar exploration will get into full swing this year. The paper wrote that Japan is planning to launch two microminiature uncrewed vehicles developed jointly by JAXA and the University of Tokyo via the United States’ Space Launch System together with NASA’s Orion spacecraft in February or later as part of the Artemis mission. Noting that Japan is also developing a transport vehicle for the International Space Station, the paper speculated that Japan is hoping to foster industries related to space development through participation in international space development programs.

In a related story, Monday’s Yomiuri reported that on Dec. 31 NASA announced a plan to extend the operation of the International Space Station through 2030.
