The Saturday editions of all national dailies wrote that the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) trade agreement took effect on Saturday, noting that the pact involves 15 nations, including Japan, China, South Korea, and ASEAN countries, that constitute about 30% of the world’s population and 30% of global GDP. Mainichi wrote that the pact is expected to revitalize trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region and reorganize supply chains beyond national borders. The paper speculated, however, that Japan may face difficulty striking a balance between the United States’ desire to maintain its influence in the region and China’s ambition to become the regional leader.
