All national dailies reported on Sunday that the official campaign period for the Nago mayoral election started on Sunday, kicking off an important election year in Okinawa. The race will be between incumbent Mayor Toguchi Taketoyo, who is supported by the ruling LDP and Komeito party, and former Nago assembly member Kishimoto Yohei, who is backed by the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, the Japanese Communist Party, the Social Democratic Party, and Reiwa Shinsengumi. The dailies said the major issue in the election will be whether to approve the relocation of the Futenma base to Henoko, explaining that while Kishimoto is opposed to the relocation plan, Toguchi has given tacit consent to the relocation work. The election will take place on Jan. 23.
