Diet likely to adopt motion on human rights without naming China

Yomiuri reported that the ruling LDP is aiming to pass in early February a parliamentary resolution expressing concern about the “serious human rights situations” in Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong in a bid to show a tough stance on human rights abuses ahead of the opening of the Beijing Winter Olympics on Feb. 4. The LDP draft resolution, however, reportedly does not include such words as “China,” “human rights abuses,” or “condemnation” due to opposition from the Komeito party. While the LDP leadership is aiming to enact the motion unanimously after seeking support from opposition parties, anti-Chinese hardliners within the LDP are reportedly displeased with its “weak language.”
