NHK reported that Foreign Minster Hayashi commented on the situation in Ukraine during a regular news conference on Friday. Concerning the current tensions created by Russia’s deployment of a large number of troops along the border with Ukraine, Hayashi said that Japan has consistently supported the sovereignty of Ukraine. The foreign minister added that Japan is closely watching the Russian military’s moves with concern and will respond appropriately by working together with the other G7 member states and the rest of the international community. Hayashi also said the GOJ will make utmost efforts to secure the safety of Japanese nationals in Ukraine. When asked by a reporter about the possibility of Japan acting in concert with the United States if Washington imposes economic sanctions on Moscow in the event of a military invasion of Ukraine, Hayashi said he would not answer hypothetical questions but added that Japan would respond appropriately.
