All Saturday papers reported that some members of the GOJ coronavirus taskforce subcommittee released a recommendation calling for young people who think they might have COVID-19 not to visit clinics and instead stay home to recover if cases continue to rise. The public health professionals are reportedly concerned that the elderly and people with underlying diseases may not receive adequate healthcare if young people flock to clinics and hospitals for testing and treatment even though their symptoms are minor. The experts also reportedly proposed restricting people’s outings if necessary to stem the spread of the highly transmissible Omicron strain.

Today’s Nikkei wrote that diagnostic testing kits are depleting rapidly in Tokyo and elsewhere, voicing concern that the shortage may make it difficult for the central and local governments to keep economic and business activities up and running while trying to combat the virus at the same time.
