Japan confirms 44,817 new COVID-19 cases on Monday

Asahi reported that 44,817 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed nationwide on Monday, almost twice the number logged last Monday. According to the Health Ministry, the number of seriously ill COVID-19 patients nationwide on Monday rose by 9 from the previous day to 439, and 17 people reportedly died. The paper said Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, Yamagata, Akita, and Saga prefectures recorded their highest figures on Monday, with Kanagawa’s daily cases topping 5,000 and Saitama’s topping 3,000 for the first time. Tokyo recorded 8,503 new cases on Monday, about 2.3 times higher than a week ago. Tokyo’s hospital bed occupancy rate was 36.7% as of Monday. The paper said Tokyo plans to ask the GOJ to place it under a state of emergency if the rate reaches 50%. In Osaka, which confirmed 4,803 new cases on Monday, the hospital bed occupancy rate has reached 51.4%.
