Weekend papers reported on the continued spike in coronavirus infections across the country, saying that the daily caseloads amounted to almost 82,000 on Friday and 85,000 on Saturday, marking record highs for five consecutive days. On Sunday, over 78,100 people tested positive nationwide, including 15,895 in Tokyo. Both figures were record highs for a Sunday.

According to the Health Ministry, close to 264,000 people infected with the virus are currently recuperating at home nationwide, almost twice as high as the number of such patients at the peak of the fifth wave last August. Approximately 17,000 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized across Japan as of Friday, up more than 30% from a week ago.
