NHK reported on remarks made at the Diet this morning by Chairman Omi of the GOJ coronavirus taskforce subcommittee on emerging calls for the reinstatement of a state of emergency for Tokyo and other prefectures amid the continued rise in the epidemic curve. While saying that a state of emergency may need to be issued while taking into account various factors, such as hospital bed occupancy, the number of patients with serious symptoms, and the strain on healthcare capacities, the nation’s top virologist stressed that issuing such a declaration would require agreement on what measures to combat the Omicron strain should look like and a public consensus on the need to limit social and economic activities. He acknowledged that there are strong arguments both in favor of and against issuing a state of emergency at this juncture.
