Tokyo, Feb. 1 (Jiji Press)–New automobile sales in Japan in January dropped 14.2 pct from a year earlier to 329,699 units, marking a year-on-year decline for the seventh consecutive month, industry data showed Tuesday.

The decline resulted from production halts caused by semiconductor shortages and the resurgence of coronavirus infections since the turn of the year.

Sales of minivehicles powered by engines up to 660 cc fell by 17.1 pct to 122,576 units and those of larger vehicles by 12.5 pct to 207,123 units, according to the Japan Light Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle Association and the Japan Automobile Dealers Association, respectively.

Six of eight major Japanese automakers, including industry leader Toyota Motor Corp. <7203>, suffered sales plunges.

With makers continuing to curb output, “it’s hard to predict how long unit sales will be adversely affected,” an official of the light vehicle association said.
