Ryukyu Shimpo reported that according to a survey conducted by the Okinawa Defense Bureau, the number of takeoffs and landings at MCAS Futenma in 2021, including touch-and-go exercises, rose by 3% from last year to 18,017, marking a record high since the bureau began the survey in April 2017. The paper said the increase was due to a surge in the number of aircraft arriving from other bases, adding that the latest finding exposed the fact that the GOJ’s plan to “ease the burden on Futenma” is nowhere near being achieved. According to the survey, aircraft flew to the Futenma base 3,194 times in 2021, up 20.5% from the previous year, and the number of take-offs and landings by Futenma-stationed aircraft was 14,823, down 0.2% from the previous year. The paper said that out of the 3,194 flights to Futenma by aircraft from other bases, 147 involved F-35s or F-15s.
