Demonstrators in Tokyo have protested against the Beijing Winter Olympics, accusing China of human rights abuses.

About 20 people, including Uyghurs and Tibetans, held the protest near the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo on Friday morning before the opening ceremony of the Games.

They said Chinese authorities are violating human rights in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Hong Kong and the Tibet Autonomous Region.

Participants read out a statement saying China’s oppression of human rights is far from the Olympic spirit.

A Uyghur man, Ahmet Letep, from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, says he cannot confirm the safety of his family since he has been unable to make a single call to them in recent years.

He says no one opposes the Olympics itself, but he thinks the protesters will find the Beijing Games too painful to watch.
