NHK reported that the U.S. government announced on Monday that it will lift the 25% tariff on a portion of Japanese steel products starting this April. The network added, however, that the USG will continue to impose a 10% tariff on Japanese aluminum products. According to the report, up to 1.25 million tons of Japanese steel products a year will be exempt from Section 232 tariffs under a tariff-rate quota system. Commerce Secretary Raimondo reportedly said in a statement that the announcement “will further help us rebuild relationships with our allies around the world as we work to fight against China’s unfair trade practices.” Noting that the United States had partially lifted the tariffs on both steel and aluminum products from the EU starting last month, the network said the GOJ will continue to negotiate with the U.S. side for the complete lifting of the tariffs on both steel and aluminum.
