Ryukyu Shimpo and Okinawa Times wrote on Friday that the Okinawa Prefectural Government turned down on Thursday the Okinawa Defense Bureau’s request for permission to transplant about 35,000 colonies of coral at Henoko. The bureau submitted the request in December 2021. According to Okinawa Times, the prefectural government made the decision based on the argument that it will not be necessary to transplant the coral after all because it has become impossible for the GOJ to move forward with landfill work following the local government’s rejection in November 2021 of the defense bureau’s application for design changes to reinforce the soft seabed in the vicinity of the coral reefs.
