Nikkei wrote that during an Upper House Budget Committee session on Wednesday, Defense Minister Kishi commented on the possibility of Japan acquiring the capability to attack enemy bases. Kishi reportedly said that he would not rule out the option of sending SDF aircraft into an adversary’s airspace to strike its military installations to prevent missile attacks. Kishi added, however, that the use of such an option would need to fulfill the prerequisites for invoking the right to national self-defense, including being a situation where there are no other appropriate options to defend the nation and where the use of force is limited to what is necessary to carry out the mission.
