Kanoya, Kagoshima Pref., Feb. 21 (Jiji Press)–The Defense Ministry said Monday that a field survey will start in Kanoya, southwestern Japan, on Feb. 28 for the planned temporary deployment of the U.S. military’s MQ-9 reconnaissance drones.

The ministry’s Kyushu Defense Bureau informed the city government of Kanoya, Kagoshima Prefecture, that Tokyo and Washington aim to complete the joint survey within March in preparation for the MQ-9 deployment at the Maritime Self-Defense Force’s air base in the city.

In the survey, basic research will take place between Feb. 28 and March 4 to check facilities and equipment at the MSDF base and local conditions outside the base, such as accommodations, restaurants and transportation systems.

A subsequent technical investigation will cover the base’s infrastructure related to the operations of the unmanned aircraft, including runways.
