All national dailies wrote that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Tuesday that a diplomat belonging to the Japanese Embassy in Beijing was temporarily detained by Chinese authorities in Beijing on Monday. Vice Foreign Minister Mori summoned Yang Yu, charge d’affaires ad interim at the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo, and lodged a strong protest over the detention by saying it was a clear violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The ministry said Mori demanded that China apologize and take action to prevent a recurrence. While providing no further details, the ministry added that the diplomat was engaged in legitimate work.
