All national papers wrote on Monday that North Korea test-fired what appeared to be a ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan on Sunday morning. As the projectile splashed down outside Japan’s EEZ after flying some 300 kilometers at a maximum height of 320 kilometers, the missile was probably launched on a lofted trajectory. This was the eighth such missile launch this year and the first in almost a month. The papers speculated that Pyongyang had probably refrained from staging provocations during the Beijing Olympics and decided to rattle the Biden administration when it is busy dealing with the Ukraine crisis. Defense Minister Kishi told the press that the latest provocation was intolerable. Nikkei said the DPRK capitalized on a “power vacuum” on the Korean Peninsula caused by the United States’ preoccupation with Ukraine and the ongoing presidential election campaign in South Korea.

According to the papers, MOFA Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau Director General Funakoshi spoke by phone with Special Representative for North Korea Sung Kim to reconfirm bilateral cooperation as well as trilateral coordination with South Korea in stemming further DPRK provocations.
