Tokyo, March 11 (Jiji Press)–The Japanese government at a cabinet meeting Friday approved a revision of an ordinance related to the foreign exchange law to ban exports of high-technology products to Russia and Belarus as sanctions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The revised ordinance will take effect March 18, with the export embargo covering around 200 products, including high-performance chips and machine tools. Belarus is believed to be providing support to Russia for the invasion.

Japan will also prohibit exports of 31 general-purpose items, such as communications equipment, that can be used for military purposes and 26 related technologies. In addition, Tokyo will ban shipments of oil-refining equipment to Russia, aiming to deal a heavy blow to the country’s core energy industry.

These measures will also be implemented from March 18.
