All networks reported on a meeting held in Rome between National Security Advisor Sullivan and Chinese Communist Party Politburo Member Yang Jiechi in Rome. The U.S. official reportedly conveyed strong apprehension about Beijing offering a helping hand to Moscow in waging war in Ukraine. NHK and TV Asahi quoted an unnamed senior Biden administration official as telling the press afterward: “We do have deep concerns about China’s alignment with Russia at this time, and the National Security Advisor was direct about those concerns and the potential implications and consequences of certain actions.”

The broadcasters took up Japan’s reaction to the Sullivan-Yang session, quoting Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno as saying: “We do not comment on meetings between third parties. Having said this, it is now more important than ever for the international community to unite and respond resolutely in order to safeguard the foundation of the international order. Japan plans to call for China to act responsibly in coordination with the United States and other partner nations.”
