Japan to reduce energy dependence on Russia in coordination with G7

NHK reported online on remarks made to the press this morning by Trade and Industry Minister Hagiuda, who stressed that Japan will try to reduce its reliance on energy supplies from Russia in coordination with the other G7 members. “We will strive to lessen the degree of our energy dependence on Russia through diversifying energy sources, including renewable and nuclear energy, and investing in LNG development in line with the G7 summit leaders’ statement calling for mutual coordination,” he was quoted as saying. As for the nation’s deep involvement in offshore LNG and oil drilling projects in the Russian Far East, the cabinet minister said: “We will look into the initiatives from the standpoint of energy security and in line with the G7 leaders’ statement.”
