On March 16, Kajita Takaaki, president of the Science Council of Japan (SCJ), met with Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu at the Prime Minister’s Office [Kantei] for the first time. They exchanged views on the [previous prime minister’s] refusal to appoint six SCJ-nominated scholars to the council. After the meeting, Kajita told reporters he had communicated to Matsuno the SCJ’s desire for the six scholars to be appointed. Kajita did not directly refer to his exact exchange with Matsuno but said he “wants to have dialogue on what steps could be taken.” He thus suggested that no progress was made at the meeting toward resolution.
