CHUBU — On March 11, the “liaison council for consultations on Kadena Air Base (Sanrenkyo),” comprising members from the city of Okinawa and the towns of Kadena and Chatan, mailed letters of protest and requests to relevant Japanese and U.S. organizations to call for the suspension of the deployment and operation of F-35A advanced stealth fighter jets at the Kadena base.

In the letters, the council pointed out that a total of 12 F-35As have flown to the Kadena base since Feb. 19, triggering an increase in the number of instances of noise exceeding 90 decibels and complaints [from local residents].

The council also pointed out that noise from fighter jets was confirmed from 6 to 7 a.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. during readiness training that began on Feb. 28. In addition, it requested that the noise be reduced, saying: “[The operation of the F-35As] runs counter to the noise reduction measures at the Kadena base.  It is absolutely unacceptable as it imposes an additional base-hosting burden on local residents.”

The letters were mailed to the U.S. Air Force’s 18th Wing, the Okinawa Defense Bureau, the Okinawa Liaison Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the U.S. Consulate-General in Naha.
