President Biden dispatched bipartisan delegation to Taiwan to assure Asian allies

Monday’s Asahi carried an interview with former NSC director Michael Greene, who met with Taiwan President Tsai in Taipei recently as part of a five-person bipartisan delegation led by Admiral Michael Mullen, a former JCS chairman. Greene disclosed that the five delegates were asked by White House Indo-Pacific Coordinator Kurt Campbell to travel to the island territory as an informal USG delegation right after Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24. “The main purpose was to assure not only Taiwan but also Japan and other allies,” said the former White House official, adding that the move was also intended to convey to China and other countries the message that the United States continues to attach importance to the security of the western Pacific and Taiwan Strait.
