Both Ryukyu Shimpo and Okinawa Times said the ASDF announced on Thursday that a unit in charge of warning and surveillance activities using the “TPS102” mobile radar will be permanently deployed to Yonaguni Island, Okinawa, starting today. According to Ryukyu Shimpo, the deployment of the unit, which comprises about 20 members, is intended to strengthen Japan’s intelligence capabilities with the PLA in mind. ASDF Chief of Staff Izutsu reportedly stressed the significance of permanently deploying the unit without naming a specific nation: “Neighboring nations are intensifying and expanding their activities,” he said. “We have been taking all necessary measures in a systematic manner to conduct warning and surveillance activities in the Nansei region.”
