NHK reported on remarks made to the press yesterday by Komeito party Chief Representative Yamaguchi on growing calls within the ruling LDP for sharply ramping up defense spending in FY2023 and beyond. Regarding former Prime Minister Abe’s insistence that the GOJ should earmark at least 6 trillion yen ($49 billion) per year, Yamaguchi said: “It is necessary to hold discussions on bolstering the defense budget. However, it should not be increased so drastically in just one year.” The politician stressed that tax revenue may not warrant so much spending on defense at a time when people’s lives have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic and surging prices.
