Both Ryukyu Shimpo and Okinawa Times reported that the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism has decided to rescind the Okinawa prefectural government’s rejection of a request by the Okinawa Defense Bureau to change the design of the Futenma replacement facility off Camp Schwab. Okinawa Times said the ministry has effectively endorsed the Okinawa Defense Bureau’s claim that the soft seabed in the vicinity needs to be improved, adding that it plans to announce the rescindment today. The papers also wrote that the ministry is planning to issue a recommendation to Okinawa to approve the design change request based on the Local Autonomy Act. Ryukyu Shimpo wrote that Okinawa Governor Tamaki is bound to respond by taking additional measures, adding that this will highly likely develop into another court battle between the central government and Okinawa.
