Nikkei reported on Sunday that the governments of Japan and Russia are making arrangements to start negotiations on the fishing quotas for salmon and trout in waters off Hokkaido as early as the week of April 11. Although the ban on salmon and trout fishing in the area is usually lifted on April 10 after the two nations hold talks on fishing quotas, the two governments have not started the talks yet due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. As Japan is set to strengthen its economic sanctions on Russia, the paper said the talks might run into difficulties.
