Ryukyu Shimpo and Okinawa Times reported on a growing consensus between the ruling and opposition camps on passing by the end of this month a parliamentary resolution in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Okinawa’s return to Japanese administration on May 15. The envisaged motion will reportedly include such words as “strong Okinawa economy,” “platform for peace building,” and “bridge between nations” to highlight the objectives that the southernmost prefecture will strive to achieve. The opposition camp is reportedly aiming to incorporate a phrase on reducing the base-hosting burden and is wary of the LDP’s idea to mention the security situation in relation to the Senkaku Islands and the Taiwan Strait.
