TOKYO — Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited Yasukuni shrine on Thursday for its annual spring festival, despite a previous visit that sparked criticism from Asian neighbors who view the war-linked shrine as a symbol of Japan’s wartime militarism.

Abe, seen as one of the most conservative members of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, visited the Shinto shrine in Tokyo while in office in 2013. He also paid a visit last year after stepping down as prime minister in 2020.
