NHK reported that Finance Minister Suzuki told reporters on Thursday that he held bilateral talks with Treasury Secretary Yellen on the day after attending the G20 financial ministerial in Washington on Wednesday. Suzuki reportedly said that he and Yellen discussed recent movements in the financial market, including the dollar-yen rate, adding that he told his U.S. counterpart that the yen’s recent depreciation against the dollar is too rapid. Suzuki also told the press that he agreed with the U.S. treasury chief that the United States and Japan will maintain close communications on currency movements. Condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the finance minister said that he confirmed with Yellen that Washington and Tokyo will continue imposing sanctions on Russia in close coordination with the other G7 members.
