Sankei reported that Russian Deputy Prime Minister Trutnev, who is in charge of development in the Russian Far East, said on Monday that Russia will further promote its development and investment in the Northern Territories and expressed the view that Russia will make the disputed islands “its own.” The paper conjectured that these remarks were made in reaction to Japan’s 2022 Diplomatic Bluebook, which says that the Northern Territories are “illegally occupied by Russia.”
